An aluminium pillar candle mould is a hollow metal casting that shapes molten wax into a firm, freestanding pillar candle. You simply thread a wick through it, pour in melted wax, let it set, and slide out a smooth cylindrical candle. This 2.5" x 2.5" mould from Azlok is reusable, easy to clean and well suited for beginners and small candle makers alike.
Why choose an aluminium mould
Aluminium conducts heat well, which helps wax cool evenly and gives you that clean, glossy finish pillar candles are known for. Unlike flexible silicone, a rigid metal mould holds its exact shape pour after pour, so your candles come out uniform every time. It is lightweight (around 100 grams), washable and built to last through many batches.
The 2.5-inch diameter is a comfortable, versatile size. It works for festival displays during Diwali and weddings, decorative table centrepieces, or simple everyday candles you can dress up with colour and fragrance.
How to use the mould step by step
- Prepare the wick. Thread a suitable wick through the small hole at the base and centre it. Tie the top end to a pencil or stick laid across the mould's mouth, and seal the base hole with mould sealer or a small bit of putty to stop leaks.
- Melt your wax. Use a double boiler to gently melt paraffin or a pillar-blend soy wax. Heat to the temperature your wax recommends, usually around 60–75°C.
- Add colour and fragrance. Stir in candle dye and fragrance oil once the wax is off the heat and slightly cooled, following the recommended usage rate.
- Pour slowly. Pour the wax steadily into the mould, keeping the wick centred. Leave a little room at the top for a second pour.
- Let it cool. Allow the candle to set fully at room temperature. A dip may form around the wick as it cools; top it up with a second pour of leftover wax.
- Unmould. Once completely cool and firm, remove the base seal, snip the wick, and gently push the candle out. Trim the wick to about 1 cm before lighting.
Tips for a flawless finish
- Warm the empty mould slightly before pouring to reduce air bubbles and improve surface shine.
- Do not overheat the wax; too-hot wax can cause frosting and cracks.
- If the candle sticks, pop the mould in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes so the wax contracts, then it slides out easily.
- Use a wick sized for a 2.5-inch pillar so the flame burns across the full width without tunnelling.
- Cure finished candles for a day or two before burning for a better scent throw.
Safety notes
Molten wax is hot, so work carefully and keep a heat-proof surface underneath. Never leave heating wax unattended and avoid direct flame under it. Melt wax in a well-ventilated space, keep children and pets away from your work area, and let everything cool fully before handling. When burning your finished candle, place it on a stable, non-flammable holder and away from curtains or paper decorations.
Cleaning, care and storage
After unmoulding, wipe out any leftover wax with a paper towel while the mould is still slightly warm. For a deeper clean, wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly to prevent water spots. Store the mould in a dry place, away from dust. With basic care, an aluminium mould keeps performing for years.
Azlok stocks this mould in single units and 2- or 5-unit packs, so you can scale up if you make candles in batches or run a small business. Priced at ₹199 for a single unit, it is an affordable way to start moulding your own pillars at home.
FAQ
What wax works best in an aluminium candle mould?
Firm pillar waxes work best, such as paraffin or a pillar-blend soy wax. Container-only soft waxes are not ideal because they may not hold a freestanding shape or release cleanly.
How do I stop the candle from sticking to the mould?
Make sure the wax has cooled completely before unmoulding. If it still resists, chill the mould in the fridge for 15–20 minutes so the wax contracts, then push the candle out gently.
Can I add colour and fragrance?
Yes. Stir in candle dye and fragrance oil after removing the wax from the heat, following the recommended amounts for your wax quantity.
How many candles can one mould make?
As many as you like. Aluminium moulds are reusable, so with proper cleaning between pours you can make batch after batch from a single mould.
What size candle does the 2.5" mould produce?
It makes a pillar candle roughly 2.5 inches in diameter, a versatile size for centrepieces, gifts and festival decor.
