Brown Liquid Candle Dye: How to Colour Your Candles Right

Azlok Brown Liquid Candle Color Dye is a concentrated liquid colourant you add to melted wax to give your candles a warm, earthy brown tone. A few drops per batch is usually enough, and the final shade will vary depending on the type of wax you use. It is made for candle making only and is not meant for cosmetic use or skin contact.

Brown is one of the most useful colours to keep on your shelf. It suits coffee, chocolate, sandalwood, tobacco and woody fragrance candles, and it pairs beautifully with autumn and rustic decor. Because it is a liquid, it disperses quickly and evenly without the clumping you sometimes get with dye chips or powders.

What you can make with it

This dye works with most candle-making waxes, though the depth of colour changes with each one.

  • Container candles in soy, paraffin or blended wax for a soft, translucent brown.
  • Pillar and moulded candles where a richer, opaque brown looks premium.
  • Themed and seasonal candles — think coffee bean, gingerbread, sandalwood or leather scents.
  • Ombre and layered candles by adjusting the number of drops in each pour.

How to use brown liquid candle dye

The method is simple, but a little patience gives cleaner results.

  1. Melt your wax to the temperature recommended for your wax type, usually around 60–75°C.
  2. Remove the wax from heat before adding colour.
  3. Add the dye one drop at a time, stirring well after each drop. Start with 1–3 drops per 500 g of wax.
  4. Check the shade on a spoon or a small dab of cooled wax, since molten wax always looks darker than the finished candle.
  5. Add your fragrance oil, stir gently, and pour once the colour is even.

If you are colouring a large batch, mix the dye into a small amount of wax first, then blend that into the rest. This helps the colour spread uniformly and prevents streaks.

Tips for a better finish

  • Go slow. Liquid dyes are strong. You can always add more, but you cannot easily remove excess colour.
  • Test your wax. Natural soy waxes tend to mute colours, so you may need a drop or two more than with paraffin.
  • Keep notes. Record drops per batch so you can repeat a shade you like.
  • Mind the wick. Very high dye loads can affect how cleanly a candle burns, so use the least amount that gives you the shade you want.
  • Blend for custom tones. A drop of red or orange warms brown up; a touch of black deepens it toward espresso.

Safety notes

This is a candle-making colourant, not a cosmetic ingredient. Please keep these points in mind:

  • Not for cosmetic use, and not for use on skin, lips or in soap meant to touch the body.
  • Do not ingest. Keep away from children and pets.
  • Work in a ventilated space and handle hot wax carefully to avoid burns.
  • Wipe up spills promptly — liquid dye can stain surfaces, clothing and skin.

Buying and storage

Azlok offers this Brown Liquid Candle Color Dye in a range of pack sizes — 10 g for trial batches right up to 5 kg for regular makers and small businesses — starting at ₹149. Since a little goes a long way, even the smallest pack colours many candles.

Store the bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap tightly closed to prevent evaporation and contamination. With proper storage the shelf life is around two years. Give the bottle a gentle shake before use if it has been sitting for a while.

FAQ

How much brown dye should I use per kilo of wax?

Start with roughly 2–6 drops per kilogram, adding one drop at a time and testing on cooled wax. Soy and natural waxes may need slightly more than paraffin.

Will the brown look the same in every wax?

No. The shade varies according to the wax. Paraffin usually gives a clearer, brighter brown, while soy and beeswax tend to soften and mute it.

Can I use this dye in soap or lotion?

No. This is formulated for candle making only. It is not for cosmetic use and should not be applied to skin or added to body products.

Can I mix it with other candle colours?

Yes. Brown blends well with red, orange, yellow and black to create custom warm tones, from caramel to deep espresso.

Why does my wax look darker when melted?

Molten wax always appears deeper in colour than the set candle. Always judge the final shade from a small cooled sample before pouring the full batch.
