How to Make Your Own Lip Balm with Shea & Jojoba Lip Balm Base

Azlok's Shea & Jojoba Lip Balm Base is a pre-made, solid paste that you simply melt, customise and pour into tubes or pots to make your own lip balm. It saves you from measuring waxes, butters and oils individually, so you can go straight to adding your chosen flavour, colour or essential oil.

The base is a blend of coconut oil, organic beeswax, shea butter, castor oil, soybean oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil, cocoa seed butter and skin-friendly conditioning agents, with tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) and BHT to help keep the oils stable. It has a light brown colour and a naturally creamy feel.

What you can use it for

This base is designed as a foundation for lip care products, whether you are making a few balms at home or running a small handmade brand. Common uses include:

  • Classic lip balms in twist-up tubes or tins.
  • Flavoured balms using food-grade flavour oils.
  • Tinted balms with cosmetic-grade colours or micas.
  • Seasonal balms for dry winter lips, thanks to its rich shea and cocoa butter content.

Because it is sold from 500 gm right up to 20 kg, it suits both hobbyists and businesses scaling up production.

How to make lip balm with the base

The process is straightforward. Work in a clean, dry space with sanitised tools.

  1. Weigh the amount of base you need for your batch.
  2. Melt gently in a double boiler or over low heat until fully liquid. Avoid overheating, as high temperatures can degrade the oils.
  3. Add your extras once melted and slightly cooled: a few drops of flavour or essential oil, and a small amount of colour if you want a tint. Start with tiny quantities and adjust.
  4. Stir well so everything is evenly mixed.
  5. Pour quickly into tubes or pots before it starts to set, as the beeswax firms up as it cools.
  6. Cool undisturbed at room temperature, then cap and label.

Do a small test batch first. If the balm feels too firm, you can melt in a little extra carrier oil; if too soft, the beeswax-rich base usually holds shape well on its own.

Tips and safety notes

  • Keep additions food-safe. Lips inevitably ingest small amounts of balm, so only use flavourings and colours labelled safe for lip products.
  • Go light with essential oils. They are potent. A very small percentage is enough, and some, like strong mint or citrus oils, can irritate sensitive lips. Patch-test on your inner arm before wider use.
  • Don't overheat. Gentle melting protects the vitamin E and the natural butters.
  • Mind allergens. The base contains coconut, almond, soybean and beeswax. Label your finished products clearly so users with allergies can avoid them.
  • Hygiene matters. Sterilise containers and tools to keep your balms fresh and safe.

This is a cosmetic base for external use on the lips. It is not a medicine and is not intended to treat any condition. Keep away from children during the hot melting stage.

Buying and storage

Azlok offers the Shea & Jojoba Lip Balm Base starting at ₹549, in packs of 500 gm, 1 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg and 20 kg, so you can buy a small amount to experiment or a larger quantity for regular production. The base is made in India and has a shelf life of around two years when stored well.

Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, in a sealed container to keep moisture and dust out. Solid butters and waxes can soften in the Indian summer, so a consistently cool spot helps maintain texture. Finished balms should also be stored away from heat to stop them melting in the tube.

FAQ

Can I use the lip balm base on its own?

Yes. You can melt and pour it as is for a simple, unscented balm. Adding flavour, colour or essential oil is optional and lets you personalise it.

Is this base vegetarian or vegan?

It contains organic beeswax, so it is not vegan. The rest of the blend is plant-derived oils and butters.

How much flavour or essential oil should I add?

Start small, generally a fraction of a percent to a low single-digit percentage of your batch, and adjust to taste. Always use lip-safe, food-grade flavourings and patch-test essential oils.

Why is the base light brown?

The natural colour comes from unrefined butters and oils like shea and cocoa. It does not affect performance and usually shows up only faintly in the finished balm.

How long will my finished lip balms last?

With clean tools, hygienic containers and cool storage, homemade balms made from this base typically keep well for many months. Use the base within its two-year shelf life and note that added ingredients may affect longevity.
