Virgin Coconut Oil: A Cold-Pressed Carrier Oil for Skin, Hair and DIY Making

Virgin Coconut Oil is a cold-pressed carrier oil extracted from fresh coconut meat (kernel), prized for moisturising skin, conditioning hair, and as a natural base for soaps, candles and cosmetics. It has a strong coconut aroma, a colourless appearance when liquid, and blends easily with essential oils like lime, lemon, lavender and eucalyptus.

What Virgin Coconut Oil is used for

Because it nourishes without heavy chemical processing, this oil (botanical name Cocos nucifera) has a wide range of everyday and craft uses:

  • Hair care: A pre-wash or overnight oil that helps reduce protein loss and tames frizz. Also used in shampoos, hair oils and serums.
  • Skin moisturiser: Softens dry patches on elbows, knees and cuticles, and works as a lightweight body oil.
  • Massage oil: A smooth carrier for aromatherapy blends and baby massage.
  • Makeup remover: Gently dissolves waterproof mascara and long-wear foundation.
  • DIY and craft base: A staple in cold-process soaps, scented candles, lip balms, lotions and body butters.
  • Cooking: Being cosmetic/edible grade, it can also be used in the kitchen for sautéing and baking, where its aroma suits many dishes.

How to use it

The right method depends on what you are making.

For hair

Warm a small amount between your palms and massage into the scalp and lengths. Leave for 30 minutes to overnight, then wash out with a mild shampoo. A little goes a long way—too much makes rinsing difficult.

For skin

Apply a thin layer to damp skin after a shower to lock in moisture. As a makeup remover, massage onto dry skin, then wipe with a soft cloth and cleanse as usual.

For soap and candle making

Coconut oil adds hardness and lather to cold-process soap; use it as part of your oil blend and run your recipe through a lye calculator. In candles it can be combined with waxes for a smoother melt. For aromatherapy blends, add a few drops of essential oil per tablespoon of coconut oil.

A note on melting and texture

Coconut oil is liquid in warm weather and turns solid below roughly 24°C. This is completely normal and does not affect quality. To re-liquefy, place the container in warm water or a warm spot—avoid direct high heat. The specific gravity is around 0.93 and the flash point is 180°C, so it is stable for normal cooking and warming.

Safety and patch testing

  • Do a patch test on your inner forearm before applying to face or a baby's skin, and wait 24 hours.
  • Always dilute essential oils in this carrier oil—never apply neat essential oils to skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Use edible-grade oil for cooking and follow good kitchen hygiene.
  • Oil-soaked cloths used in candle or DIY work can be a fire hazard—dispose of them safely.
  • This is a cosmetic and cooking ingredient, not a medicine. It does not treat or cure any condition.

Buying and storage tips

Azlok's Virgin Coconut Oil is cold-pressed, made in India, and comes in sizes from 500 gm up to 25 kg, so home users and small businesses can both stock up. The 500 gm pack is priced at ₹649. It has a shelf life of about two years when stored well.

  • Keep the container tightly closed, away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Use a clean, dry spoon to avoid introducing water or crumbs, which can spoil the oil.
  • Store bulk quantities in a cool, dark place; smaller working amounts can be kept handy in your bathroom or kitchen.
  • If the oil smells rancid or sour rather than sweet and coconutty, discard it.

FAQ

Is Virgin Coconut Oil good for daily hair use?

Yes, in small amounts. Many people use it as a weekly deep-conditioning treatment or a light daily leave-in on the ends. Adjust the quantity to your hair type so it doesn't feel greasy.

Why does my coconut oil become solid?

Coconut oil naturally solidifies below about 24°C and melts above it. Both states are fine to use. Warm the bottle gently in hot water to turn it back to liquid.

Can I use this oil in cold-process soap?

Yes. Coconut oil is a common soap-making oil that contributes hardness and a bubbly lather. Always calculate your lye amount for the full oil blend using a reliable soap calculator.

Which essential oils blend well with it?

Lime, lemon, lavender and eucalyptus pair nicely. Add a few drops per tablespoon of coconut oil for massage or skincare blends.

Is it safe for baby massage?

It is widely used for gentle baby massage, but skin sensitivities vary. Do a patch test first and consult your paediatrician if your baby has any skin concerns.
