D-Limonene

D-limonene is a clear, colourless liquid with a strong orange-peel smell. It is used as a citrus note in fragrances, soaps and home fragrance, and as a solvent in citrus cleaners, degreasers and adhesive removers. It is flammable and can irritate skin, especially once it oxidises.

What is d-limonene?

D-limonene, also written (R)-limonene, is a terpene hydrocarbon and the main component of orange peel oil. Commercially, much of it is recovered from citrus peel during juice processing.

  • Formula: C10H16
  • CAS number: 5989-27-5
  • Molar mass: 136.24 g/mol
  • Boiling point: about 176 °C
  • Density: about 0.84 g/ml, lighter than water
  • Solubility: does not mix with water; mixes with alcohol and oils

Grades and pack sizes at Azlok

Azlok lists D Limonene in its aromatic raw materials range, for perfumers, soap and candle makers and cleaner makers. The pack size is on the product page. Fresh d-limonene smells clean and orangey; old or oxidised material smells harsh, almost like turpentine, and should not go into skin products. See today's price per kg.

Common uses

  • Fragrance: fresh orange and citrus top note in perfumes, soaps, detergents, candles and room sprays
  • Cleaning: solvent in citrus degreasers, hand cleaners for grease, sticker and gum removers
  • Industry: solvent for resins and in some paints and coatings
  • Labs: base for citrus clearing agents used as a less harsh alternative to xylene in some histology work

How to use it

In fragrance blends. It is a top note that fades fast, so pair it with longer-lasting notes. Check current IFRA standards and labelling rules, since limonene is a listed fragrance allergen and oxidised limonene can sensitise skin.

Citrus cleaner. D-limonene does not mix with water. Blend it first with an equal amount of a solubiliser such as polysorbate 80, then stir into water. For sticker residue, use a few drops neat on a cloth, then wipe with soapy water.

In soap and candles. Because it is so volatile, it fades quickly in cold process soap and hot candle wax. Use it with longer-lasting citrus materials or fixatives, and add fragrance to wax at the temperature the wax supplier recommends.

Test on a hidden spot first. It can soften or damage some plastics, rubber, paint and varnish.

Safety and storage

  • Flammable liquid. Keep it away from flames, gas stoves and sparks, and work in a ventilated room.
  • It irritates skin and eyes. Wear nitrile gloves and goggles when handling it neat. If it gets on skin, wash with soap and water; if in eyes, rinse with water for several minutes.
  • It oxidises in air and light, which makes it more likely to cause skin allergy. Keep bottles full, tightly closed and in the dark.
  • Keep away from strong oxidisers such as peroxides and nitric acid.
  • Keep away from children. Toxic to aquatic life, so don't pour neat liquid down drains.

Choosing the right grade and pack

Buy a pack size you'll use within several months, since opened d-limonene oxidises. Small packs suit perfumers and hobbyists; cleaner makers can buy more. Decant into glass or metal containers, as it slowly attacks some plastics, especially polystyrene. For 25 kg and above, use the bulk inquiry form.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

What does d-limonene smell like?
It smells strongly of fresh orange peel. In perfumery it is a bright citrus top note that fades quickly, so it is blended with longer-lasting notes. Neat, it can smell sharp; diluted it is softer.
Is d-limonene the same as orange oil?
No. Orange oil is a natural mixture that is mostly d-limonene, often 90% or more, plus other aroma compounds. D-limonene is the single compound, so its smell is simpler and flatter than orange oil.
How do I make a citrus cleaner with d-limonene?
Mix d-limonene with an equal amount of polysorbate 80 or a similar solubiliser, then stir it into water. Test on a hidden area first, as it can damage some plastics, rubber and paint. Wear gloves.
Is d-limonene flammable?
Yes. It is a flammable liquid with a flash point near 50 °C. Keep it away from flames, stoves and sparks, and store it tightly closed in a cool place.
Can d-limonene cause skin allergy?
Yes. Limonene, especially once oxidised by air, can cause skin sensitisation in some people. Use fresh material, follow IFRA standards for skin products, and patch test finished products for 24 hours.
How should I store d-limonene?
Keep it in a full, tightly closed glass or metal container, away from heat, sunlight and flames. Air and light oxidise it, which changes the smell and makes skin allergy more likely, so smaller containers that stay full are better.
