एथिल अल्कोहल / इथेनॉल (Ethanol)

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is a clear, flammable alcohol used as a laboratory solvent, a cleaning and degreasing liquid, a fuel for spirit lamps, and a solvent for shellac and resins. Denatured ethanol has additives that make it unfit to drink, so it is only for external and technical use.

What is ethanol?

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, is a clear, colourless liquid with a typical alcohol smell. Many people in India know denatured ethanol simply as spirit, and in Hindi it is written एथिल अल्कोहल or इथेनॉल. Denatured ethanol has small amounts of other substances added so that it cannot be drunk. That is why it is sold freely for lab and technical work.

  • Formula: C2H6O (C2H5OH)
  • CAS number: 64-17-5
  • Molar mass: about 46.07 g/mol
  • Boiling point: about 78 °C; freezing point about −114 °C
  • Flash point: about 13 °C, so it is highly flammable at room temperature

It mixes fully with water and dissolves many oils, resins, dyes and fragrance materials, then evaporates quickly.

Grades and pack sizes at Azlok

Our ethanol is 99.9% denatured ethanol, listed for analytical and laboratory work. It is close to water-free, which matters for many lab procedures and for dissolving resins cleanly.

Common uses

  • Laboratory: general solvent, making solutions and extracts, rinsing and drying glassware, fuel for spirit lamps.
  • Woodwork: dissolving shellac (lac flakes) for French polish and sealing wood.
  • Cleaning: removing grease and fingerprints from glass, metal and electronic parts.
  • Industry: solvent for inks, varnishes, resins and dyes, and a raw material for other chemicals.
  • Hobby: thinning some alcohol-based inks and dyes.

Note: perfume makers use specially prepared perfumer's alcohol. Ask us about the denaturant before using our ethanol in any product that touches skin.

How to use it

  1. Diluting for lab work: to make a lower strength, measure the ethanol and top up with distilled water to the final volume. For example, about 50 mL of 99.9% ethanol made up to 100 mL with water gives roughly 50% v/v. Mix in a measuring cylinder, as the volumes shrink slightly on mixing.
  2. Shellac polish: a light 1 lb cut is about 120 g of shellac flakes per litre of ethanol. Soak the flakes in a glass jar, stir now and then, and allow a day to dissolve fully. Strain through cloth before use. Mixed shellac keeps for a few months in a closed jar; label it with the date, since old shellac may not dry hard.
  3. Spirit lamp: fill only when the lamp is cold and unlit, to about two-thirds. Wipe spills before lighting. Ethanol burns with a pale blue flame that is hard to see in daylight.
  4. Cleaning: use undiluted on a lint-free cloth and let it dry fully before switching any device on.

Safety and storage

  • Not for drinking or any internal use. Denatured ethanol contains additives that can be poisonous. If swallowed, get medical help at once.
  • Highly flammable. Keep away from flames, gas stoves, cigarettes, heaters and sparks.
  • Use in a ventilated room; heavy vapour causes headache and dizziness.
  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves for large volumes.
  • Keep away from strong oxidisers such as potassium permanganate, nitric acid and bleach.
  • Store tightly capped in a cool, shaded place, away from sunlight, in the original labelled bottle.
  • Keep away from children.
  • Let small amounts on cloths evaporate outdoors. Don't pour large quantities down drains.

Choosing the right grade and pack

Our 99.9% denatured ethanol suits labs, woodwork and cleaning where low water content matters. If your work needs ethanol for food, drinks or medicines, this is not the right product; those need licensed, non-denatured grades.

The 500 mL pack is enough for most students and hobbyists. Labs and polishers who go through a litre a month should take the 1000 mL. Ethanol slowly evaporates once opened, so don't overbuy. For drums of 25 kg and above, send a bulk inquiry.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

Can denatured ethanol be used for drinking or in medicines?
No. Denatured ethanol has substances added to make it unfit to drink, and some of them are poisonous. Never use it in food, drinks, home remedies or anything taken internally. Products for those uses need licensed, non-denatured alcohol.
What is the difference between ethanol and IPA?
Both are alcohols that dissolve oils and evaporate fast. Ethanol is the usual choice for lab solutions, shellac polish and spirit lamps. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is more common for electronics and resin-print cleaning. Both are highly flammable.
How do I dissolve shellac (lac) in ethanol for French polish?
Use about 120 g of shellac flakes per litre of ethanol for a light 1 lb cut. Put both in a glass jar, close the lid, stir occasionally and give it a day to dissolve. Strain through cloth before brushing or padding it on.
Can I use this ethanol to make perfume at home?
Perfume makers usually use special perfumer's alcohol. Our ethanol is denatured for lab use, and the denaturant may not be suitable for skin. Ask us for the denaturant details before using it in anything applied to the body.
Is ethanol a good fuel for a spirit lamp?
Yes, it is the standard spirit lamp fuel. Fill the lamp only when cold and unlit, wipe off spills, and keep the bottle well away while the lamp burns. The flame is pale blue and hard to see in daylight, so be careful.
Why does the ethanol level drop in an opened bottle?
Ethanol evaporates easily, even through a loose cap, and it absorbs moisture from air, which lowers its strength. Close the bottle tightly after each use and store it in a cool, shaded place.
