The price of silicon dioxide depends on its type and grade. Fumed and precipitated silica are processed differently, and food, pharma or lab grades cost more than technical grade because of extra testing. Pack size matters as well. Silica is very light and bulky, so packing and freight weigh heavily on small packs. GST is added on top. The 100 g pack suits resin art, repairs and trials. Around 1 kg suits regular workshop use. - Why does silica powder seem expensive for a small pack?
- Fine silica is extremely light, so even 100 g fills a large pouch. Packing, handling and shipping that volume cost more per kg than for dense powders. Buying a larger quantity spreads those costs and lowers the per-kg figure.
