Aloe Vera Soap Base: A Beginner's Guide to Making Soothing Melt & Pour Soap

Azlok Aloe Vera Soap Base is a ready-to-use, melt and pour soap base enriched with aloe vera extract that lets you make soothing, moisturising bars at home without handling lye. You simply cut it, melt it, add your colour and fragrance, and pour into a mould — the bar is ready to use once it sets. It is SLS-free, paraben-free, vegan-friendly and gentle enough for face, body and hair.

What is a melt and pour soap base?

A melt and pour base is soap that has already gone through the saponification process for you. That means no measuring caustic soda, no curing for weeks, and no guesswork. This aloe vera version has a melting point of around 135°F and a soft white finish, so it melts quickly and blends easily with oils and natural additives. With a TFM above 40%, it cleanses effectively while the added glycerin and aloe help the skin retain moisture.

Uses and benefits

Aloe vera is valued for its cooling, calming feel, which makes this base a good choice for mild, everyday soaps. Common uses include:

  • Gentle face and body bars for daily cleansing that does not leave skin tight
  • Soothing soaps for skin that feels dry, sensitive or irritated after sun exposure
  • Hair or shampoo bars, since aloe is often used to condition the scalp and strengthen roots
  • Custom gifting and small-batch selling — add botanicals, clays or dried petals for a handmade look

Because it is odourless, you have a blank canvas to build your own scent, from lavender to lemongrass.

How to use it step by step

  1. Cut the base into small, even cubes so it melts uniformly.
  2. Melt gently using a double boiler or short bursts in the microwave. Do not let it boil.
  3. Add soap colour at approximately 180°–185°F for even dispersion.
  4. Add fragrance or essential oil at a lower temperature, around 138°–140°F, so the scent does not burn off.
  5. Stir gently to avoid air bubbles, then pour into your mould.
  6. Spritz the surface with a little isopropyl alcohol to pop surface bubbles.
  7. Let it set at room temperature for a few hours until firm, then unmould.

Start with roughly 1–3% fragrance and add colour a few drops at a time — it is easier to deepen a shade than to lighten it.

Tips and safety notes

  • The base is alkaline (pH around 10.3), which is normal for soap. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and rinse well if it happens.
  • Do a patch test with any new fragrance or additive before making a large batch, especially for facial soaps.
  • Use skin-safe, soap-grade fragrance oils and colours — kitchen food colours can bleed or fade.
  • Overheating can cause the soap to go cloudy or sweat, so melt slowly.
  • This is a cosmetic product for external use. Do not ingest, and keep away from children during melting.

Buying and storage

Azlok offers the Aloe Vera Soap Base starting at ₹439, with pack sizes of 1 KG, 5 KG, 10 KG, 20 KG and 25 KG — handy whether you are trying it out or supplying a small business. It has a shelf life of about two years. To keep it in good condition, wrap unused portions tightly in cling film or store in an airtight bag, since exposed soap tends to draw moisture from the air and develop a sticky, glycerin-dew surface. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

FAQ

Do I need to add lye to this soap base?

No. The saponification is already done. You only melt, customise and pour, which makes it safe and beginner-friendly.

Can I use it on my face and hair?

Yes, it is formulated for face, body and hair. As with any new product, do a patch test first, particularly if your skin is sensitive.

How much fragrance oil should I add?

A general guide is 1–3% of the melted weight, added at around 138°–140°F. Add gradually and stir gently to avoid a scent that is too strong.

Why does my finished soap sweat?

Glycerin soap naturally attracts moisture from humid air. Wrap bars tightly once set and store them in a dry place to prevent that dewy film.

Is this soap base vegan and free from harsh detergents?

Yes. It is vegan-friendly, sulfate-free, SLS-free, paraben-free and contains no added detergent, so it suits mild, everyday soaps.
