Bhringraj Liquid Extract: A Maker's Guide to This Ayurvedic Hair Herb

Bhringraj Liquid Extract is a concentrated, ready-to-blend liquid made from the Ayurvedic herb Eclipta Alba (also called False Daisy), designed to be added to shampoos, serums, creams, lotions and soaps at around 1–2% of your formula. It carries the herb's traditional reputation for hair and scalp care in a form that mixes easily, without you having to brew or strain anything.

What is Bhringraj Liquid Extract?

Bhringraj is one of the most recognised herbs in Ayurveda, belonging to the sunflower (Asteraceae) family. This extract is prepared at a 4:1 herb-to-extract ratio — meaning roughly 4 kg of raw herb goes into every 1 kg of finished extract — so it is a fairly concentrated liquid rather than a simple infusion. It is a transparent, practically odourless and tasteless liquid, which makes it convenient to work into products without changing their smell.

Azlok offers it in two solubility types so you can match it to your recipe:

  • Water soluble: alcohol-free, extracted using vegetable palm glycerin (glycerol). Ideal for water-based products.
  • Oil soluble: extracted using soy oil as the solvent. Suited to oil-based blends and anhydrous products.

Where you can use it

Because it is neutral in colour and odour, this extract slots into a wide range of DIY personal care formulations. Common applications include:

  • Shampoos, conditioners and scalp serums
  • Hair oils and hair masks
  • Face serums, face wash and toners
  • Creams, lotions and body butters
  • Cold-process and melt-and-pour soaps

Makers usually reach for Bhringraj when they want an Ayurvedic, herb-forward angle for hair and scalp products. It is a functional additive, not the base of your formula.

How to use it in your formulations

The recommended usage is 1–2% of the total formula. A little goes a long way, so measure by weight for accuracy.

  1. Pick the right type. Use the water-soluble version for shampoos, toners and lotions, and the oil-soluble version for hair oils and anhydrous balms.
  2. Add it in the cooling phase. For emulsions like creams and lotions, add the extract once the mix has cooled below 40°C to protect the actives.
  3. Stir gently and evenly. Blend thoroughly so it disperses through the batch.
  4. Do a small test batch first. Check for clarity, smell and stability before scaling up.

Note that this extract contains BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as a preservative for the extract itself. That does not replace the broad-spectrum preservative your water-containing finished product will still need.

Safety and honest notes

This is a cosmetic raw material for external use in properly formulated products. Please keep these points in mind:

  • Avoid direct contact with the eyes.
  • Keep it out of reach of children.
  • The oil-soluble grade is extracted using soy oil — relevant if you or your customers have soy sensitivities.
  • The product is described as free from gluten, artificial colour, heavy metals and fertilisers, but always patch-test a finished product before regular use.
  • No herb–drug interactions are known, but caution is sensible with any external application on sensitive or broken skin.

We describe traditional and cosmetic uses here; this is not a medicine and no cure claims are made.

Buying and storage tips

Azlok stocks Bhringraj Liquid Extract in sizes from a handy 100 gm bottle right up to 25 kg, so hobbyists and small businesses can both find a practical quantity. Pricing starts at ₹349, and packaging is done as per requirement for bulk orders. COA and MSDS documents are available for both the oil-soluble and water-soluble grades, which is worth requesting if you sell finished products.

For storage, keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Under good conditions the shelf life is around 2 years. Always confirm which solubility type you are ordering so it matches your recipe.

FAQ

What does 4:1 extract ratio mean?

It means about 4 kg of raw Bhringraj herb is used to produce 1 kg of extract, giving you a more concentrated liquid than a plain infusion. Because of this concentration, only 1–2% is needed in most formulas.

Is Bhringraj Liquid Extract water or oil soluble?

Both versions are available. The water-soluble grade is alcohol-free and glycerin-based for water-based products, while the oil-soluble grade is soy-oil based for oil blends and anhydrous products.

How much should I add to a shampoo or serum?

Follow the recommended 1–2% of the total weight of your formula. Start at the lower end, test stability and clarity, then adjust.

Does it have a smell or colour?

No. It is described as tasteless, odourless and a transparent liquid, so it blends into products without altering their fragrance or appearance.

Can I use it directly on my hair or skin?

It is intended as an ingredient to be diluted into finished products, not applied neat. Formulate it into an oil, serum or cream, avoid the eyes, and patch-test before regular use.
