How to make a gel candle step by step
- Prepare your container. Use clean, dry, heat-resistant glass. Fix a wick at the centre using a wick sticker and hold it upright with a wick bar or a pencil laid across the rim.
- Melt the gel gently. Cut the gel into small pieces and melt slowly in a double boiler on low heat. Gel needs a higher temperature than paraffin, so be patient and stir occasionally. Avoid direct flame.
- Add colour and fragrance. Use only liquid dyes made for gel wax and candle-safe fragrance oils. Add fragrance once the gel is fully melted, following the oil's recommended dosage. Too much oil can make the gel cloudy.
- Arrange your embeds. Place shells, beads or sand in the jar before pouring, or add them in layers as you pour.
- Pour slowly. Pour the hot gel down the side of the jar to reduce bubbles. Some tiny bubbles are normal and many makers like the effect.
- Cool and trim. Let it set undisturbed at room temperature. Once fully set, trim the wick to about 6 mm before lighting.
Tips and safety notes
- Use a wick rated for gel wax; the wrong wick can smoke or drown.
- Keep embeds away from the wick and flame path. Use only non-flammable decorations such as glass and shells, not plastic or paper.
- Melt on low heat and never leave hot wax unattended. Gel reaches high temperatures.
- Work in a ventilated area and keep melted wax away from children and pets.
- Do a small test batch first to check clarity, colour and scent strength.
