Candle Gel Wax: How to Make Crystal-Clear Decorative Candles at Home

Candle gel wax is a transparent, jelly-like candle base that lets you make see-through decorative candles with embedded objects like shells, beads or coloured sand. It burns longer than many traditional waxes and holds fragrance oils well, which gives a stronger scent throw. Azlok's Candle Gel Wax is unscented and clear, so you control the colour and fragrance yourself.

What is gel wax and how is it different?

Despite the name, gel wax is not a plant or bee wax at all. It is a clear, mineral-oil-based gelling material that sets into a firm but flexible jelly. Compared with paraffin or soy, it is denser, springier and completely transparent when set. That clarity is the whole point: you can suspend decorative items inside the candle and they appear to float in glass.

Because it is denser, a gel candle of the same size tends to burn for a longer time. It also grips fragrance oil nicely, so scented gel candles can throw a noticeable aroma across a room.

Popular uses

  • Decorative container candles with seashells, glass beads, dried botanicals or coloured sand.
  • Scented candles using candle-grade fragrance oils.
  • Themed gift candles such as beach, ocean or festive designs.
  • Cosmetic and craft projects where a clear gel medium is required.

Always pour gel wax into heat-safe glass containers. Because the wax gets very hot and stays clear, it is best suited to glass jars and tumblers rather than metal tins or plastic.

How to make a gel candle step by step

  1. Prepare your container. Use clean, dry, heat-resistant glass. Fix a wick at the centre using a wick sticker and hold it upright with a wick bar or a pencil laid across the rim.
  2. Melt the gel gently. Cut the gel into small pieces and melt slowly in a double boiler on low heat. Gel needs a higher temperature than paraffin, so be patient and stir occasionally. Avoid direct flame.
  3. Add colour and fragrance. Use only liquid dyes made for gel wax and candle-safe fragrance oils. Add fragrance once the gel is fully melted, following the oil's recommended dosage. Too much oil can make the gel cloudy.
  4. Arrange your embeds. Place shells, beads or sand in the jar before pouring, or add them in layers as you pour.
  5. Pour slowly. Pour the hot gel down the side of the jar to reduce bubbles. Some tiny bubbles are normal and many makers like the effect.
  6. Cool and trim. Let it set undisturbed at room temperature. Once fully set, trim the wick to about 6 mm before lighting.

Tips and safety notes

  • Use a wick rated for gel wax; the wrong wick can smoke or drown.
  • Keep embeds away from the wick and flame path. Use only non-flammable decorations such as glass and shells, not plastic or paper.
  • Melt on low heat and never leave hot wax unattended. Gel reaches high temperatures.
  • Work in a ventilated area and keep melted wax away from children and pets.
  • Do a small test batch first to check clarity, colour and scent strength.
  • Never eat gel wax, and keep burning candles away from anything flammable.

Buying and storage

Azlok Candle Gel Wax is made in India and available in packs from 500 g up to 25 kg, so you can buy a small quantity to experiment or bulk sizes for a candle business. The 500 g pack is priced at ₹249, which makes it easy to try a few designs before scaling up.

Store the wax in a cool, dry place, tightly closed and away from direct sunlight and heat. Kept this way it has a shelf life of about two years. If you need documentation for commercial use, a COA and MSDS can be provided.

FAQ

Is gel wax the same as normal candle wax?

No. Gel wax is a clear, mineral-oil-based gelling material, while paraffin and soy are opaque waxes. Gel is transparent, denser and springy, which is why it is used for see-through decorative candles.

Can I add fragrance to gel wax?

Yes. Use candle-safe fragrance oils and add them to the fully melted gel at the recommended dosage. Adding too much oil can cause cloudiness, so follow the fragrance guidelines and test a small batch first.

What container should I use for gel candles?

Use only clean, heat-resistant glass containers. Gel burns very hot, so avoid plastic and thin or low-quality glass that could crack.

Why does my gel candle look cloudy or full of bubbles?

Cloudiness usually comes from overheating, too much fragrance, or the wrong dye. Pour slowly down the side of the jar to reduce bubbles, though small bubbles are natural and often look attractive.

How long does gel wax last in storage?

Kept sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, Azlok Candle Gel Wax has a shelf life of around two years.
