Castile Soap Base is a ready-to-use melt and pour base made from olive oil that you simply cut, melt, colour, scent and pour into moulds to make gentle, skin-friendly soap at home. Azlok's version is white, odourless and vegetarian, with a soft, creamy lather that suits sensitive skin and beginner soap makers alike.
What makes Castile soap different
Traditional Castile soap gets its name from the olive-oil soaps of Spain, and that olive-oil heritage is what gives this base its mild, moisturising character. Instead of stripping the skin, it cleanses while leaving it feeling comfortable. Azlok's Castile Soap Base carries a TFM (Total Fatty Matter) above 40%, is sulphate-free, paraben-free, SLS-free and alcohol-free, which is why so many makers reach for it when creating bars for the face, hair and body.
A quick honest note: the pH of this base is around 9.7, which is normal for true soap. That is why we describe it as pH-balancing for a soap product rather than acidic like the skin's surface. If you want a lower-pH cleanser, a syndet base is the alternative.
What you can make with it
- Everyday bathing bars — plain or lightly fragranced for daily use.
- Sensitive-skin soaps — the gentle olive-oil formula suits those who react to harsher detergents.
- Facial and shaving bars — its creamy lather works well for the face.
- Herbal and botanical soaps — add neem, turmeric, oats, clays or dried flowers.
- Gift and wedding favours — small decorative bars for small businesses and hobbyists.
How to use it, step by step
- Cut the base into small, even cubes so it melts uniformly.
- Melt gently using a double boiler or in the microwave in short bursts. The base melts around 135°F (about 57°C). Do not let it boil.
- For fragrance oils, mix at approximately 138–140°F, adding roughly 2–3% of the soap weight (start low and adjust to taste).
- For soap colours, work a little warmer, around 180–185°F, and stir well to avoid streaks.
- Add any extras — a teaspoon of carrier oil, clay, or exfoliant per 500 g works well.
- Pour into moulds, spritz the top with a little rubbing alcohol to pop surface bubbles, and let it set for a few hours.
- Unmould, then let the bars firm up and dry for a day before wrapping.
Tips for better bars
- Don't overheat. Repeated high heat can dull the lather and cause a rubbery texture.
- Go easy on add-ins. Too much oil or liquid can stop the soap from hardening. Keep extras under about 5% of the weight.
- Wrap promptly. Melt and pour soap draws moisture from the air; wrapping in cling film or shrink film keeps beads of "sweat" off the surface.
- Patch test new blends on your inner arm before regular use, especially with essential oils or strong botanicals.
Safety notes
Melted soap base is hot — handle it like any hot liquid and keep children and pets away while you work. Fragrance and essential oils should be used within recommended skin-safe limits and never applied neat. This is a cosmetic soap base for external use only; do not eat it. Work in a ventilated space when using fragrance oils, and store any colours and fragrances out of reach of children. Azlok's base is free from synthetic detergents, but always do your own patch test since every skin is different.
Buying and storage
Azlok's Castile Soap Base starts at ₹249 and comes in packs from 500 g up to bulk 25 kg, so you can buy a small block to experiment or scale up for a small soap business. It has a shelf life of about 2 years. Store it in a cool, dry place, tightly wrapped, away from direct sunlight and humidity. If the surface develops slight moisture beads over time, that is the glycerin doing its job — just wipe and re-wrap.
FAQ
Is Castile Soap Base good for sensitive skin?
Yes. Its olive-oil formula is mild and free from SLS, sulphates, parabens and added fragrance, which makes it a popular choice for sensitive and reactive skin. Always patch test your finished bar first.
Can I use it on my face and hair?
The base is suitable for face, hair and body. For the face, keep fragrance low or leave it unscented, and rinse well after use.
What is the best temperature to add fragrance?
Melt the base to a smooth liquid, then add fragrance oil at roughly 138–140°F. Add soap colour a little warmer, around 180–185°F, stirring thoroughly.
Why does my soap sweat after making it?
Melt and pour soap contains glycerin, which attracts moisture from humid air. Wrapping bars tightly in film soon after they set prevents most of this sweating.
Is the base vegan and vegetarian?
Yes. It is made from olive oil and plant-derived ingredients, and Azlok lists it as 100% vegetarian and vegan.
