A clear soap base is a ready-made, glycerin-rich soap block that you simply melt, colour, scent and pour into moulds to make transparent, glass-like soaps at home. Azlok's Ultra Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base is designed exactly for this — it is colourless, odourless and vegan-friendly, so you get a clean base to build your own recipes without handling lye or curing the soap for weeks.
What is a melt and pour clear soap base?
Melt and pour means the hard work is already done. The soap has been saponified and stabilised at the factory, so you don't touch caustic soda or wait a month for it to cure. You just melt it, customise it and let it set. The "clear" in this base refers to its high clarity — once melted and poured, it sets into a see-through bar that shows off embedded flowers, herbs, glitter or layered colours beautifully.
Azlok's base is made with water, propylene glycol, sodium stearate, glycerin, sucrose, sodium laurate and EDTA. The glycerin content is what keeps your finished soap gentle and moisturising, while the base is sulfate-free, paraben-free, SLS-free and alcohol-free. It suits all skin types and can be used on face, body and even as a hair-wash bar.
What you can make with it
- Transparent decorative soaps — embed dried petals, coffee beans, loofah slices or small toys for kids.
- Coloured and layered bars — pour in stages to create gradients or two-tone designs.
- Exfoliating bars — stir in poppy seeds, oatmeal, ground coffee or pumice.
- Fragrant soaps — add skin-safe fragrance oils or essential oils.
- Small-batch products — the 5 KG, 10 KG and 20 KG packs suit home businesses and gifting orders.
How to use the clear soap base
- Cut and weigh: Chop the base into small, even cubes so it melts uniformly.
- Melt gently: Use a double boiler or short 20–30 second bursts in the microwave. The melting point is around 135°F (about 57°C), so it liquefies quickly — avoid boiling it.
- Add colour: Stir in a few drops of cosmetic-grade liquid colour or a pinch of mica. Less is more for a clear finish.
- Add fragrance: Mix in fragrance or essential oil, usually 1–3% of the soap weight, once it is off the heat.
- Add extras: Fold in exfoliants or botanicals when the soap starts to cool slightly, so they stay suspended instead of sinking.
- Pour and set: Pour into moulds, spritz the top with a little rubbing alcohol to pop surface bubbles, and let it set for a few hours before unmoulding.
Tips and safety notes
- Work in small batches while you learn — melted soap sets fast once poured.
- Overheating can cloud the base and cause a burnt smell, so heat slowly and stir often.
- Wrap finished bars in cling film or shrink wrap. Glycerin soap attracts moisture from the air and can develop "sweat" (dew-like droplets) if left uncovered.
- The base has a pH of around 9.8, which is normal for soap. Do a patch test with your finished, scented bar before regular use, especially on facial skin.
- Keep the raw base and hot melted soap away from children. Do not ingest.
- If you add essential oils, follow safe dilution limits and avoid known irritants on sensitive or broken skin.
Buying and storage
Azlok offers this clear soap base in 500 Gm, 1 KG, 5 KG, 10 KG and 20 KG packs, with pricing from ₹229. The 500 Gm size is a sensible starting point for first-timers, while bulk packs work out better for regular makers and small brands. Store the base in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and humidity, and keep it sealed when not in use. Unopened, it has a shelf life of around two years. Because glycerin draws water, tightly closing the pack matters just as much for the raw base as for the finished soap.
FAQ
Do I need lye to use this soap base?
No. The soap is already saponified. You only melt, customise and pour, which makes it beginner-friendly and safe for home use.
Why does my clear soap look cloudy?
Cloudiness usually comes from overheating, adding too much colour or fragrance, or stirring in too much oil. Melt gently, keep additives minimal, and the base should stay transparent.
How long does the soap take to set?
Most bars firm up in a few hours at room temperature. You can speed this up by placing the moulds in the fridge for 30–60 minutes, but avoid the freezer.
Is this soap base suitable for sensitive skin?
It is sulfate-free, paraben-free and glycerin-rich, which many people with sensitive skin find gentle. Still, always patch-test your finished, scented bar first, since added fragrance or colour can affect skin differently.
Can I use it to make soaps to sell?
Yes. It is suited to both DIY and commercial use, and the larger 5–20 KG packs are convenient for small businesses. Ensure your labelling and any product claims meet the applicable regulations in your area.
