Glycerine Soap Base: How to Make Soft, Moisturising Bars at Home

Glycerine soap base is a ready-made, meltable soap that lets you make your own soap bars at home without handling lye. You simply melt it, add your fragrance and colour, pour it into a mould, and let it set. Azlok's High Glycerin Ultra White Melt and Pour Soap Base is a clear-to-white base enriched with glycerin, which draws moisture to the skin and helps soothe dry, chapped patches.

What is glycerine soap base?

Melt and pour soap base is soap that has already been saponified (the chemical reaction between oils and lye) during manufacturing. That means the hard, technical part is done for you. A glycerine base stands out because it is rich in glycerin, a natural humectant that softens skin and reduces the tight, dry feeling many ordinary soaps leave behind.

Azlok's base is white in colour, odourless, and made in India. It is SLS-free, paraben-free, sulphate-free, alcohol-free and 100% vegetarian, with a TFM above 40% and a melting point of around 135°F (about 57°C). Because it is unscented and uncoloured, you have a clean canvas to design exactly the soap you want.

Uses and who it's for

This base suits home hobbyists, gifting, and small businesses building their own soap line. It works as a bathing soap for face, hair and body. Common projects include:

  • Simple moisturising bars for daily use
  • Layered or embedded soaps with colour designs
  • Herb- or clay-added bars (oatmeal, neem, charcoal, turmeric)
  • Fragrance-oil scented soaps for gift hampers

How to use it, step by step

  1. Cut and weigh: Chop the base into small, even cubes so it melts uniformly.
  2. Melt gently: Use a double boiler or microwave in short 20-30 second bursts. Stir between intervals. Do not overheat or let it boil.
  3. Add colour: Mix soap colour when the melt reaches roughly 180-185°F (about 82-85°C).
  4. Add fragrance: Stir in fragrance oil at around 138-140°F (about 59-60°C). A typical dose is 1-3% of the soap weight; check your fragrance oil's guidance.
  5. Pour and settle: Pour into your mould. Spray the surface lightly with rubbing alcohol to pop any air bubbles.
  6. Unmould: Let it set for a few hours until fully firm, then remove and cure the surface for a day.

Tips and safety notes

  • Work in low heat: Overheating can scorch the base and cloud a clear look. Slow and steady melting gives the best finish.
  • Prevent sweating: Because glycerine attracts moisture, finished bars can develop dewy droplets in humid weather. Wrap them tightly in cling film or shrink wrap once set.
  • Patch-test add-ins: If you add new fragrance oils or botanicals, test a small bar on your inner arm before regular use.
  • Handle heat carefully: Melted soap is hot. Use gloves and keep children and pets away from your workspace.
  • Note the pH: This base has a pH of 9-10, typical for soap. It is a bathing soap, not for eating — keep it out of reach of children.

Buying and storage

Azlok offers the glycerine soap base in 1 KG, 5 KG, 10 KG, 20 KG and 25 KG packs, with pricing starting at ₹389, so you can begin small and scale up as your projects grow. The shelf life is around two years when stored well.

Keep the base in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Reseal the packaging tightly after each use to stop it from absorbing humidity. If you are making soap to sell, request the COA and MSDS for your records.

FAQ

Do I need lye to use this soap base?

No. The base is already saponified, so there is no lye handling involved. You only melt, mix, and pour, which makes it safe and beginner-friendly.

What fragrance and colour amounts should I use?

Add fragrance oil at about 1-3% of the soap weight and stir it in at roughly 138-140°F. Add soap colour at around 180-185°F. Start light and adjust to taste.

Why does my glycerine soap sweat?

Glycerin naturally pulls moisture from the air, so bars can form surface droplets in humid conditions. Wrapping each bar tightly once it has set usually prevents this.

Is this soap base natural and vegetarian?

It is made with glycerin and plant-derived ingredients, and it is 100% vegetarian, SLS-free, paraben-free, sulphate-free and alcohol-free. It is a bathing soap for external use only.

How long does a finished bar take to set?

Most bars firm up within a few hours at room temperature. Let them cure for a day before wrapping for the cleanest finish.
