Petitgrain Essential Oil: A Fresh, Calming Citrus Note for Skin and Aromatherapy

Petitgrain essential oil is a steam-distilled oil from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), prized for its fresh, citrusy and slightly woody aroma and its calming, toning properties in skincare and aromatherapy. In simple terms, it is the leafy cousin of orange and neroli oil, and it is a favourite for relaxing diffuser blends, natural perfumes, and light facial and body preparations.

What is Petitgrain essential oil?

The name comes from the days when the oil was distilled from the tree's tiny unripe fruit. Today it is mostly extracted from the leaves and twigs, which gives a bright green, herbaceous top note over a soft woody base. Azlok's Petitgrain oil is a pale yellow to yellow liquid with a medium to thick consistency, produced by steam distillation. It is soluble in alcohols and fixed (carrier) oils, which makes it easy to work with in DIY recipes.

Common uses

  • Aromatherapy and diffusing: Its fresh scent is often used to ease tension and quiet a busy mind at the end of the day.
  • Skincare: Traditionally added in tiny amounts to face and body oils for its toning and antibacterial reputation, especially for oily or blemish-prone skin.
  • Natural perfumery: A lovely bridge between citrus top notes and floral or woody hearts.
  • Room and linen sprays: A few drops in an alcohol-and-water base freshen up living spaces.
  • Candle and soap making: Adds a clean, uplifting citrus character to handmade products.

How to use it

Petitgrain is for external use only. Always dilute before it touches your skin.

  1. Patch test first: Mix one drop into a teaspoon of carrier oil, apply to your inner forearm, and wait 24 hours.
  2. For skin: Keep the essential oil to about 1–2% of your blend. That works out to roughly 6–12 drops per 30 ml of a carrier such as jojoba, sweet almond or coconut oil.
  3. For diffusing: Add 3–5 drops to your diffuser's water reservoir. Start low and increase only if you want a stronger scent.
  4. For blends: Petitgrain pairs beautifully with rosemary, lavender, sandalwood, clove bud and sweet orange. A classic calming trio is petitgrain, lavender and a touch of orange.

Safety notes

Essential oils are concentrated, so treat them with respect.

  • Meant for external use only. Do not ingest.
  • Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and do a patch test.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure on treated skin, as citrus-derived oils can increase sensitivity.
  • Keep out of reach of children and away from eyes.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone with a medical condition, should consult a doctor before use.

Buying and storage tips

Azlok offers Petitgrain essential oil in sizes from 50 gm for home users up to bulk 25 kg packs for candle makers, soap makers and small businesses, starting at ₹269. When buying, look for the botanical name Citrus aurantium amara and steam distillation as the extraction method, which is what you get here.

To protect the aroma, store the bottle tightly capped in a cool, dark place away from heat and sunlight. Kept well, the oil has a shelf life of around two years. Because it is a natural product, slight variation in colour and scent between batches is normal and not a fault.
