एथिल वैनिलिन (Ethyl vanillin)

Ethyl vanillin (C9H10O3) is a synthetic aroma chemical with a strong, sweet, creamy vanilla odour, roughly three times as strong as vanillin. It is used in perfumes, attars, incense, candles, soaps and air fresheners, and food grade material is used as a vanilla flavouring in chocolate, sweets and bakery products.

What is ethyl vanillin?

Ethyl vanillin is a close relative of vanillin, the main odour molecule of vanilla. It has an ethyl group where vanillin has a methyl group, and that small change makes it about three times stronger. It does not occur in vanilla beans; it is made synthetically.

  • Formula: C9H10O3
  • CAS number: 121-32-4
  • Molar mass: 166.17 g/mol
  • Melting point: about 76 °C
  • Appearance: white to pale yellow crystalline powder
  • Solubility: slightly soluble in water, dissolves well in ethanol and common perfumery solvents

Odour: sweet, creamy vanilla with a caramel, slightly chocolate edge.

Grades and pack sizes at Azlok

Azlok lists ethyl vanillin under aromatic raw materials, meant for perfumery, incense, candles, soap and similar fragrance work. It is not labelled food grade, so don't use it in food or drinks. The listing doesn't give a pack size; check the product page. See today's price per kg.

Common uses

  • Gourmand, oriental and amber perfume accords, and attar blends
  • Incense sticks and dhoop masala
  • Candles, wax melts and reed diffusers
  • Room sprays and air fresheners
  • Food flavouring in chocolate, ice cream and bakery (food grade only, within FSSAI limits)

How to use it

Make a stock solution. Ethyl vanillin is easiest to handle as a 10% solution. Dissolve 10 g in 90 g perfumer's alcohol or dipropylene glycol (DPG), warming gently in a warm water bath if needed. Label it with the name, strength and date.

Blending. Add drops of the 10% solution to your accord and smell it on a paper strip after a few minutes and again after a few hours. A little goes a long way; too much makes a blend sugary and flat.

Incense and candles. Dissolve it fully in the fragrance oil or DPG before adding it to wax or dhoop masala. Undissolved crystals give uneven scent and can show as specks. Keep notes of each trial so you can repeat the one that works.

Discolouration. Like vanillin, it tends to turn soaps, candles and some lotions brown or tan over time, especially white products. Test a small batch and wait a couple of weeks before making a large run.

Check current IFRA standards for any limits on this material in the product type you are making.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid breathing the dust and avoid contact with eyes. Wear gloves and safety glasses when weighing.
  • Patch test any finished product applied to skin.
  • Keep it away from strong oxidisers and iron containers, which can discolour it.
  • Store in a tightly closed amber glass or HDPE container, in a cool, dark place. Light and air slowly yellow it.
  • Keep away from children and away from food stores, since this pack is not food grade.

Choosing the right grade and pack

For perfume, incense and candle work, a small pack lasts a long time because you use it in fractions of a percent. Buy food grade separately if you flavour food.

Incense and candle makers using it in bulk, at 25 kg or more, can send a bulk inquiry.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

What is the difference between vanillin and ethyl vanillin?
Both smell of vanilla. Ethyl vanillin has an ethyl group in place of vanillin's methyl group, which makes it roughly three times as strong and slightly creamier. Neither is the same as natural vanilla extract, which contains many other compounds.
Can I use this ethyl vanillin in cakes or ice cream?
Not this pack. It is listed as an aromatic raw material for fragrance use, not as food grade. Food flavouring needs food grade ethyl vanillin with FSSAI labelling, used within FSSAI limits.
Why does ethyl vanillin turn soap brown?
Vanillin-type molecules discolour over time in soap, candles and some creams, especially with alkali, light or iron present. Expect tan to brown tones. Test a small batch first, or use it in products where colour change doesn't matter.
How do I dissolve ethyl vanillin for perfume?
Make a 10% stock: 10 g ethyl vanillin in 90 g perfumer's alcohol or DPG, warmed gently in a water bath until clear. Use this solution in your blends; it is easier to dose than the powder.
Is ethyl vanillin natural?
No. Ethyl vanillin does not occur in vanilla beans. It is made synthetically. If you need a natural vanilla note, use vanilla absolute or extract, which are different and more expensive materials.
How strong is ethyl vanillin compared with vanillin?
It is roughly three times as strong as a flavouring and noticeably powerful in fragrance. When replacing vanillin in a formula, start with about a third of the amount and adjust by smelling.
