Basil Hydrosol: What It Is and How to Use This Fresh Herbal Water

Basil hydrosol is the aromatic water that remains after basil leaves are steam-distilled to extract their essential oil. It carries a soft, fresh, slightly green scent with a hint of anise, and it is gentle enough to use as a facial toner, a light mist, or a base for lotions and sprays. Azlok's basil hydrosol is distilled from tulsi (holy basil) leaves in India and comes ready to use straight from the bottle.

What Exactly Is Basil Hydrosol?

When basil is put through steam distillation, two things separate out: the concentrated essential oil and the water that has carried the steam through the plant material. That water is the hydrosol, also called floral water or herbal water. It holds a small amount of the water-soluble aromatic compounds from the plant, so it smells and behaves gently — nothing like the strength of a neat essential oil.

Basil comes in two common types: sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) and holy basil, or tulsi (Ocimum sanctum). Hydrosol can be produced from either. Basil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, which is one reason people like to add it to skin sprays and lotion recipes designed to keep things fresh and clean.

Everyday Uses

  • Facial toner: Dab onto clean skin with cotton, or decant into a spray bottle for a quick refreshing mist.
  • Facial steam: Add a splash to a bowl of hot water for a fragrant steam session.
  • DIY lotions and creams: Use it as the water portion of a homemade lotion, cream or serum.
  • Room and linen spray: Its clean, herbal aroma works well in simple room sprays.
  • Anti-fungal spray recipes: Blend into sprays meant to discourage fungal growth, thanks to basil's natural properties.

How to Use It

The beauty of a hydrosol is that it is already diluted, so it needs little preparation.

  1. As a mist: Pour into a clean spray bottle and spritz your face, keeping eyes closed. Let it air-dry or pat gently.
  2. In skincare recipes: Replace all or part of the water in your formula with basil hydrosol. Because it is water-based, it blends with alcohol and water but will not mix into fixed carrier oils.
  3. Patch test first: Apply a little to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours before using it on your face, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Tips and Safety Notes

  • Basil hydrosol is for external use. Do not drink it or use it as a food flavouring.
  • Keep it away from the eyes; rinse with clean water if it stings.
  • Being a water-based product with no synthetic preservatives, it can spoil once opened. Store it cool, use clean utensils, and watch for any change in smell or cloudiness.
  • For skincare formulas you plan to keep for weeks, consider adding a suitable cosmetic preservative.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Buying and Storage

Azlok offers basil hydrosol in a handy 100 Gm bottle with a 3 ml dropper for first-timers, and in bulk packs of 500 Gm, 1 KG, 5 KG, 10 KG and 20 KG for small businesses and regular makers. Prices start at ₹149. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Kept properly, it has a shelf life of around two years. For anything you have opened or decanted, refrigeration and a clean spray bottle will help it last longer.

FAQ

Is basil hydrosol the same as basil essential oil?

No. The hydrosol is the water left over after distilling the essential oil. It is far gentler and comes ready-diluted, while the essential oil is highly concentrated and must be diluted before use.

Can I use basil hydrosol directly on my skin?

Yes, it is generally used as-is, for example as a toner or mist. Do a patch test first if your skin is sensitive, and avoid the eye area.

Does basil hydrosol need to be refrigerated?

An unopened bottle stores fine in a cool, dry place. Once opened, keeping it in the fridge and using clean tools helps prevent spoilage since it has no strong preservatives.

What does basil hydrosol smell like?

It has a soft, fresh, slightly green aroma with a sweet anise or liquorice note. It is colourless and light.

Can I add it to my homemade cream or lotion?

Yes. Use it as the water phase in your recipe. It mixes with water and alcohol but will not blend into fixed oils, so formulate accordingly.
