Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) 99.9%: What It Cleans and How to Use It Safely

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) 99.9% pure is a fast-drying, residue-free cleaning solvent used to remove dirt, oil and grime from surfaces and to disinfect them. Because it evaporates quickly and leaves almost nothing behind, it is a favourite for cleaning electronics, glass, lenses and lab equipment. Azlok's 200mL bottle is a handy size for home and workshop use.

What is Isopropyl Alcohol used for?

IPA is one of the most versatile cleaning agents you can keep on a shelf. At 99.9% purity it contains very little water, which is exactly why it dries so fast and rarely leaves streaks or spots. Common uses include:

  • Electronics cleaning: circuit boards, connectors, PCB contacts, phone and laptop ports, and camera sensors (with care).
  • Glass and screens: spectacles, mirrors, camera lenses and display screens where a smear-free finish matters.
  • Surface disinfecting: countertops, door handles, tools and small equipment.
  • Removing residue: sticker glue, marker ink, thermal paste on CPUs, and light grease.
  • DIY and hobby work: prepping surfaces before gluing, degreasing metal parts, and cleaning 3D-print beds or resin tools.

How to use IPA for cleaning

A little goes a long way. For most jobs you do not need to soak anything.

  1. Power down electronics and unplug them before cleaning. Remove batteries where possible.
  2. Apply to a cloth, not the device. Dampen a lint-free microfibre cloth or a cotton swab with IPA rather than pouring it directly.
  3. Wipe gently in one direction for screens and lenses. Use a soft brush or swab for narrow contacts and ports.
  4. Let it evaporate fully before switching electronics back on. This usually takes only a minute or two.

For general surface disinfecting, wipe the surface clean first to remove visible dirt, then apply IPA and allow it to sit briefly before it dries. For screens, avoid harsh scrubbing on any special coatings and always test a small corner first.

Safety notes you should not skip

IPA at 99.9% is highly flammable and strong. Treat it with the same respect you would any solvent.

  • Keep away from flames and heat. No smoking, no open flames, no sparks nearby while using it.
  • Ventilate the area. Work in an open or well-aired space and avoid breathing the vapours for long periods.
  • Protect your skin and eyes. It can dry and irritate skin; wear gloves for prolonged use and keep it away from your eyes.
  • Do not ingest. IPA is toxic if swallowed. It is for cleaning, not for drinking or internal use.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Test delicate items first. Some plastics, coated screens and painted finishes can react to solvents, so try an inconspicuous spot.

Buying and storage tips

When buying IPA, purity matters. A 99.9% grade is ideal for electronics because the low water content means faster drying and less risk of moisture staying behind. Lower-purity or rubbing-alcohol blends contain more water and additives, which can leave residue on sensitive parts.

  • Store the bottle tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Keep it upright to prevent leaks, and away from food, medicines and children.
  • Because it evaporates quickly, close the cap immediately after use so you do not lose product to the air.
  • The 200mL size from Azlok is easy to store and enough for regular home, hobby and small-workshop cleaning.

FAQ

Is 99.9% IPA better than rubbing alcohol for electronics?

Yes, for most electronics. The higher purity means less water, so it dries faster and is less likely to leave residue or moisture on circuit boards and contacts. Standard rubbing alcohol usually contains more water and sometimes added ingredients.

Can I use Isopropyl Alcohol on my phone or laptop screen?

You can, but wipe carefully with a barely damp lint-free cloth and test a small corner first. Some screens have special coatings, so avoid heavy scrubbing and never pour IPA directly onto the device.

Is IPA safe to use as a hand or body cleaner?

It is intended as a cleaning and disinfecting solvent, not a skincare product. It can dry and irritate skin, and it should never be ingested. Use gloves for extended contact and keep it away from eyes.

Why does IPA dry so quickly?

Isopropyl Alcohol is volatile and evaporates fast at room temperature. At 99.9% purity there is very little water to slow it down, which is why it leaves surfaces clean and dry within a minute or two.

How should I store the bottle?

Keep it tightly capped, upright, and in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot away from heat, flames and sunlight. Store it out of reach of children and away from food.
